Last year during Christmas holidays, our SGI was attacked using telnetd and
ftpd security loophole and the intruder managed to erase entire hard disk.
While I somehow managed to get the list of offending sites, I did not know
what to do with them.
Luckily most of the data were backed up on tapes and the loss was minimal.
We installed a firewall so that the system is inaccessible directly from
outside. In addition, I monitor the SYSLOG file very closely.
