For those of you who didn't attend AMMRL _at_ ENC, one of the breakout topics
was helium. Helium is going to be available, but the cost will probably
keep rising. The cost might rise 10% per auction by the Department of
Interior.
As a group we suggest that you start thinking about helium recovery and
recycling. Bruker introduced a new line of magnets to do this and JEOL has
introduced a new product as well. For our "legacy" systems, CRYOMECH and a
company that is advertizing here at ENC might be alternatives.
I damaged a 600 MHz magnet, that will probably cost $100,000 to repair
during the July purification plant shutdown. I don't want any of you to go
through what I am in Nebraska. If your administration have questions about
why a re-liquification system is necessary, I'd be happy to talk to them
You also might track US House Bill HR527. This bill gives the Secretary of
Interior the duty to regulate helium.
