Hi all,
The preliminary theme for this year's AMMRL meeting is "Adjusting to a
Climate of Reduced Support." Other issues are likely at the top of
everyone lists as well. Here's my call for participants...

It's important to keep these discussions going every year. Facility
managers are in a unique position in academic environments (and I
suspect,
in industry, government labs and other environments). Faculty have
different concerns other staff have different responsibilities and
established support network- ever hear of a mentor program for facility
managers at a university or college? We are left on our own to balance
the needs of users, maintain instruments, train users and navigate the
grant funding landscape without a research group or, perhaps, direct
administrative support. Or, possibly, told how to manage by individuals
who are good at what they do but lack a more complete understanding of
the factors affecting the success of the facility. (too much?)
We are fortunate to have an opportunity to meet at an NMR conference.
We get a 'two-fer'- brush up on our NMR knowledge while discussing
day-to-day, on the job concerns with others with similar
responsibilities,
to comensurate with others who get it, been through it and have useful
suggestions. The AMMRL meeting gives a place to meet others we might
not interact with as we browse posters and cruise the suites. So if
your new to the field (and lucky enough to land a new job) or been in
the
same facility since the 400MHz barrier was broken, your voice and
expertise
are welcome. If you are able to attend the ENC this year, your input
and
participation are essential!

To gauge the scope of the ENC this year, please let me know if you can
attend the AMMRL meeting next Monday. Are there other topics you would
like to discuss?

Hope to see you next week,
