Varian probe manuals instruct you to use nitrogen gas for variable
temperature experiments over 100 C. The longstanding practice here is to
switch to nitrogen at much lower temperature--50 or above. Since the
nitrogen is paid for out of the facility budget, it has crossed my mind to
wonder if I am buying anything, e.g. longer mean time between probe
repairs, with the nitrogen used on the experiments below 100 C. If anyone
has relevant experience with heater coil damage, and is sadder but wiser
as a result, I would appreciate hearing about it.
