I have to agree with Glenn! I was looking to upgrade our 200 that the
undergrads use, and every vendor (new systems and used alike) said that
since I am going to use it for undergrads, I'll need a sample changer.
I adamantly refused. For years the undergrads have been using it as a
walkup system similar to how our research instrumentation is used, and
with no problems. I sit with them, explain what each step does, how a
basic proton is acquired, etc. Then after they're watched a few times
with me asking questions to see how well they understand, I let them run
free. I plan on keeping it that way. I agree, this is the one time
that they'll get a chance to really learn how NMR works, what the
different experiments give you, etc. I want them to go off to grad
school or industry and at least have a basic feel for what's going on.
