As a relatively new manager the general subject of how to handle user
training is one that I have also been worrying about.
The situation I inherited is one with relatively minimal training
requirements for users to access the instruments. I have considered
increasing the requirements, but as Bill Stevens pointed out, there are
pressures to keep the standards as low as possible. In some sense I don't
want to stand in the way of users getting their work done, but in another
sense I think there should be some aspect of learning more than just how
to use the instrument as a "black box," as it would likely help users in
the long run.
I don't know if the topics have been set for the AMMRL meeting at this
year's ENC, but I for one would be interested in learning/discussing how
various labs handle their user training.
