Greetings AMMRLers,

I know most of this has been covered in bits and pieces before, but I hoping
to hear the experiences from those of you who have upgraded both VNMR and
Solaris with similar hardware as mine.

The details: two Sun Ultra 5's, both currently running 6.1B and Solaris 2.6.
One has 128MB RAM, the other 196 MB. No CD burner on either, 4mm DAT on one.
Both have 8 GB drives partitioned with only 800MB on the root slice (I
can't remember if I did that or was it preinstalled that way)

The questions (to name a few): Presumably upgrade Solaris before VNMR, but
2.8 or 2.9? What are the disk space requirements for either? Does Solaris 9
REALLY need 2GB? How much better security wise is 9 vs 8? What about my
measly disk partition? Has anyone tried SUN's online "live upgrade" software
for doing an Solaris upgrade? I should do a ufsdump to backup the system
beforehand; one system has the DAT, but I should be able to do this remotely
on the one system that does not have the DAT drive too?

My initial guess is that due to my current hard drive configuration, my fate
will be sealed to Solaris 8, but I'll let the experts (you) call the final
shot!

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Neal
