I am neither giving or receiving on this occasion, but one of the
interesting things I found in a recent report called "High Field NMR: A
Baseline Study" was that the blue ribbon panel who put the report together
did not know of a single instance where a magnet at 500 MHz or higher has
ever been simply discarded by an academic institution. 500's have been
available for a little more than 20 years and there are supposed to be
something in excess of 1,500 500's worldwide. 400's and below have been
ditched in droves. Purely out of curiosity, I am interested to know, is
anyone aware of a counterexample? If this is still true, it can't be true
forever, but it is a pretty strong argument if you get into a discussion
about the pros and cons of re-consoling an older magnet.
